Golden Pliers is hiring! We are a repair-centered shop serving North Portland with an emphasis on gravel riding, bike camping and touring, community building, tire nerdery, and comfy steel bikes. We are a small but growing team, and all positions offer opportunities for growth as we expand our business.

Posting: Mechanic (full-time, Part-time)

Golden Pliers is seeking experienced mechanics to join our neighborhood bike shop. We especially need extra help for the busy season! We need industry professionals (no home mechanics—sorry!) who can perform a wide range of bike repairs with proficiency and attention to detail, while providing friendly customer service. We are most interested in finding the right folks who meld with our team, and can adjust hours accordingly. We strongly encourage candidates who are BIPOC, Non-Binary, Trans, Gender-Non-Conforming, and Women to apply.

Full-time: 30-40 hours/week, year round, weekend availability required.

Part time: Minimum 3 shifts/week, weekend availability required. Students, folks with side gigs, or others just looking for flexible part-time work are ideal for this position.

Mechanics will work with their peers to:

  • Assess and schedule bikes for repair

  • Use our POS system to create work orders, build quotes and use inventory tools (we use Lightspeed POS)

  • Perform walk-in repairs such as flat fixes, adjustments and accessory installs

  • Complete a wide range of repairs and services including tune-ups, assemblies, and installation of parts and accessories

  • Assist with sales, customer service, and inventory adjustments

  • Effectively communicate with customers regarding service (in person, over the phone, and through email)

  • Actively seek improvement in the areas of mechanical skills, product knowledge, and cultural competence

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of professional bike shop mechanic experience

  • Able to balance attention to detail and quality work with time management 

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to cope with frequent interruptions and a busy, social work environment

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Computer proficiency including typing skills and POS experience

  • Confidence in core mechanical skills along with curiosity, humility and a willingness to learn and ask questions

  • Friendly attitude and desire to meet people where they are

  • Commitment to our shop’s values of equity and anti-racism

  • Commitment to safe COVID practices—yes, we’re still doing that—at work and out in the world (we wear masks at work, practice good hand hygiene, and communicate with others if there’s illness in our households)

  • Ability to safely lift up to 50lbs and stand for long periods of time

  • Must be available Saturdays and Sundays

(Filled) Posting: Sales Associate / Customer service

Golden Pliers is seeking an experienced customer service professional to join our neighborhood bike shop. This position is for a bike enthusiast with some know-how who is interested in growing with our team. Usually this person spends some time growing their skills under our lead mechanics, but the role is really open to growing in a number of ways. As the shop grows, we need all kinds of helps, and love when our staff bring their interests to this role—building shop culture, merchandising and marketing, organization, etc.

Sales Associates will work with their peers to:

  • Schedule bikes for repair

  • Use our POS system to create work orders and customer accounts, adjust inventory, and make sales (we use Lightspeed POS)

  • Be the first line of customer contact

  • Perform some basic repairs / adjustments (airing tires, adjusting seat height, etc.) with an interest in growing mechanical skills

  • Take the lead in making sales, helping customers, and managing inventory

Required Qualifications:

  • Retail experience in the bike or outdoor industry 

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • An eye for merchandising and strong organizational skills

  • Computer proficiency including typing skills and POS experience

  • Confidence in customer service skills along with curiosity, humility and a willingness to learn and ask questions

  • Friendly attitude and desire to meet people where they are

  • Commitment to our shop’s values of equity and anti-racism

  • Commitment to safe COVID practices at work and out in the world (we wear masks at work, practice good hand hygiene, and communicate with others if there’s illness in our households)

  • Ability to safely lift 50lbs and stand for long periods of time

  • Must obtain (and keep up to date) OLCC server permit (we sell coffee, snacks, packaged beer and wine)

  • Must be available Saturdays and Sundays
